Wilsonart® RE-COVER™ Laminate: Applications & Installation Guidelines

Applications

Wilsonart® RE-COVER™ laminate is engineered for interior use on flat surfaces.

  • Painted Surfaces
  • Particleboard
  • Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)
  • Plywood with one A face
  • Previously bonded high-pressure decorative laminate
  • Low-pressure laminate (melamine board)

This laminate works beautifully in both vertical and horizontal installations.

Shipping & Storage

Shipping Options:

  • Rolled in a Box: The adhesive should be rolled to the outside (decorative side in).
  • Flat Shipped: The adhesive side must face down (decorative side up).

Storage Recommendations:

  • For long-term storage, keep the laminate flat with the adhesive side down.
  • Acclimate both the laminate and substrate in the same environment (recommended: 75°F and 50% relative humidity) for 48 hours before fabrication.
  • If the laminate is rolled, unroll it during this acclimation period.

Surface Preparation & Repair

Clean & Prepare:

  • Ensure all substrates are clean, dry, and free of residues.
  • When bonding to an existing decorative surface, clean thoroughly using products such as Wilsonart® 110, 121, 130, 131, 131A, acetone, isopropyl alcohol, denatured alcohol, or ammonia-based cleaners (like Windex®). Avoid cleaners that leave an oily residue.

Repairing Damaged Surfaces:

  • If the existing substrate is damaged, repair to achieve a smooth finish.
  • Recommended repair products include J‑B Weld® WoodWeld, Elmer's® Carpenter's® Wood Filler, and Bondo® All-Purpose Putty (always follow the manufacturer's instructions).
  • Sand and clean all repaired areas before applying the laminate.

Pre-Cutting & Cutting Tips

  • Use carbide-tipped saw blades, router bits, or laminate slitters for pre-cutting.
  • Always cut from the non-decorative (adhesive) side.
  • When using a table saw, position the laminate face down (adhesive side up) for a cleaner cut.

Installation Guidelines

Sheet Alignment:

  • When installing multiple sheets, leave a gap between them to allow for natural movement.
  • Non-Controlled Environments: Minimum gap of 1/16".
  • Environmentally Controlled Areas: Minimum gap of 1/32".

Important Note: RE-COVER laminate is not repositionable. Any attempt to adjust the laminate after placement can compromise the bond.

Handling Extruded Edge Banding

Choose from one of these options:

  1. Leave In Place: Apply RE-COVER to the top surface—this will expose the brown laminate edge.
  2. Replace: Remove the extruded edge banding and replace it with laminate edge banding as per manufacturer guidelines, then apply RE-COVER.
  3. Reinstall: Remove the extruded edge banding, apply RE-COVER to the top surface, and then reinstall the same type of edge banding following the recommended procedures.

For applications using 735 material exclusively, a minimum radius of 7 inches can be achieved.

Machining Post-Bonding

Immediate Machining:

  • The bonded assembly can be machined immediately.
  • For optimal results, use high tool speeds with low feed speeds.

Preparation for Routing:

  • Score the adhesive side with a razor before routing to prevent the adhesive from rolling.

Cornering & Drilling:

  • Avoid square-cut inside corners; use a minimum radius of 1/8".
  • Drill oversized holes for screws or bolts and ensure they are slightly countersunk on the face side.
